Preschool and Toddler Bible Time Books and Resources

When it comes to incorporating Bible time with your preschooler or toddler there are a lot of resources. Where to start?!

First, I want to mention that the best place to start is with yourself. Committing to regular Bible reading and quiet time is essential. Preparing your own heart and feeding your spiritual soul is vital to your role as a mother, wife and Christ follower. On the days that I miss my quiet time I feel it! I need the refreshing truth of God’s word to function at my best.

Back to your little one!

Here I will be sharing a detailed review of our four Bible time books and resources that we use in our preschool homeschool. This will include why and how we use it and what we love about each one. If you would like more information on how to incorporate Bible time with your preschooler or toddler check out my tips here

At a glance, these are the four resources we use. I am also listing these in the order that we complete them during our preschool Bible time.

  1. The New City Catechism for Kids

  2. My Key Verse Bible

  3. God’s Wisdom for Little Girls / God’s Wisdom for Little Boys

  4. Bible Basics Storybook

Toddler and Preschool Bible Time Books

The New City Catechism

We absolutely love this little book! It may be small, but it is powerful. If you aren’t familiar with the term catechism it is simply questions and answers regarding the principles of Christianity and the Bible. For the most part they are very simple and short. I think this book can be used for any age group and it has been great with my preschooler.

Since I have been using this with a preschooler, I have had to shorten some of them, specifically the section on the Ten Commandments. However, it has still worked out perfectly. During our Bible time this is the first book we open together. We sing our songs and then immediately complete our catechism for the day.

As I mentioned earlier, since I have a preschooler, we are taking this very slow. I want these truths to resonate deep into her heart at an early age. We complete the same catechism for the entire week. The book has 52 catechisms so completing one per week would be enough for an entire year. I also love the fact that as soon as we finish it we can just circle back and start all over. Have I mentioned this book is extremely affordable?! For less than a cup of coffee you can purchase this book for your little one. We love The New City Catechism for Kids! Totally worth it!

My Key Verse Bible

We love this for scripture memorization! We actually found this book at our local Ollie’s Discount Store - if you have one in our area you should check it out for books. The book is set up with a “key verse” at the beginning followed by a story and then a prayer.

As I mentioned before, we use this for scripture memorization. We pick one “key verse” each week and read it every day. This is the verse we talk about all week, recite together and do our best to memorize. At the start of the week, normally on Monday, we read the verse and the story that goes along with it and discuss it together. After that initial day, we focus soley on the verse.

This method has truly worked great with my preschooler. Completing one verse per week has been the right amount of time for her to learn the verse without getting frustrated by repeating the same thing over and over. She absolutely loves the illustrations in this book! They are very colorful and engaging and she always asks questions about the different individuals on the pages, which I love! More time for meaningful, eternal building conversation.

As a side note, every four weeks or at the end of the month, we have a review week. This is when we go back and review all the catechisms and key verses we have learned over the past month. I truly love these weeks! I get to see how much we have both learned and she is excited to see the “stories” she has remembered.

God’s Wisdom for Little Girls

I think everyone with daughters should have this book! Essentially it is like reading a verse from Proverbs 31 each day with your sweet girl. The content is the perfect length, the illustrations are beautiful, and it sets the tone for God’s expectations for little girls. What more is there to even say!

We have already read through this book three times and we are still not tired of it. We read just one page per day and it is super short and easy to add to our morning Bible time. Each page starts with a main word that describes the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31. For example, God’s little girl is priceless, cherished, confident, etc. In today’s time, these values and truths are priceless to instill in my daughters' hearts.

If you are thinking you are out of luck because you had a son(s). You are not! This author, along with her husband, wrote God’s Wisdom for Little Boys. I personally have not read this book, but I would assume it is very similar to the one for girls. I would highly recommend these for your Bible time!

Bible Basics Storybook

In essence, this is your typical preschool/kids Bible storybook. It goes through the Bible in order summarizing the main stories in the Bible from Old to New Testament.

My preschooler does enjoy the illustrations in this book as they are colorful and well done. I also think the length is appropriate. Typically each story is about three paragraphs and we are done reading it in less than 2-3 minutes depending on how many random questions and floor spins we have completed.

The Bible Storybook does list the specific chapters and verses that are being paraphrased which I really appreciate. This way, we can go back and reference our Bible for more context if needed. It also has a little prayer at the end which is nice to end our time with. I think this is a solid preschool/kids Bible storybook but I think once we are finished with it we will try out something else. I plan on trying the Jesus Storybook Bible next. I have heard great things about it, stay tuned for a review soon.

Any Bible time you incorporate with your little one is perfect. The key is just being consistent, positive and sharing God’s word. I hope our Bible time books and resources for preschoolers and toddlers will help you when thinking about options to add to your routine.
