How to Incorporate Bible Time with your Preschooler or Toddler

When it comes to our homeschool routine one of our non-negotiables is Bible time.

Let’s be real - when it comes to keeping the attention of a preschooler it can feel like a wild goose chase. So how do we get them to focus on THE most important part of every day? I am going to share my tips for a successful, fun and engaging Bible time along with our favorite Bible resources that will work for any toddler or preschooler.

Bible Time with your Preschooler or Toddler

I also want to mention that even if you aren’t homeschooling, having a special Bible time with your little one is so rewarding. Seeing them memorize scripture, sing praises to Jesus and recite Bible stories at dinner will melt your mama heart.

Here are our tips for incorporating Bible time with your preschooler or toddler.

Breakfast with Jesus

Start out with your non-negotiables first thing in the morning. As any busy mama knows, the hours seem to disappear before your eyes. Making Bible time the FIRST part of your day ensures that it doesn’t get skipped and sets the tone for what is important in your household and homeschool.  Place your Bible time resources in the kitchen or near the first place you “land” in the morning.

Sing Songs

Toddlers and preschoolers love songs! I mean who doesn’t want to hear those sweet voices sing?! Hearing my little one sing always brings a smile to my face, especially when those words are praises to Jesus. We stick with the classics - Jesus Loves Me, The Lord’s Army, Father Abraham, etc. Plus, you probably already know the songs so no planning is needed on your part.

Keep it Short and Sweet

I am pretty sure this doesn’t need explaining and I think we all know that toddlers and preschoolers do not have long attention spans but just in case we need a reminder here it is. We typically complete Bible time from start to finish in less than 5-10 minutes.

Variety is Key

Since we know toddlers and preschoolers have a short attention span, mixing things up captivates their attention. We use four different books for our Bible time. This may sound like a lot but each one is completed in a couple of minutes. This is what we are currently using.

This combination has worked well for my preschooler. She loves going through all the books and it truly does keep her focused. Check out my post here detailing reviews of the above resources, how we use them and what we love about each one.

Keep the Routine.

I do believe keeping a routine is the most important part of all. Toddlers and preschoolers thrive on routine. My little one knows breakfast time is associated with Bible time and on the occasion we have been out of town or missed our routine she is sure to let me know about it. What a blessing! This is our goal, right? Creating habits that have eternal value and setting the tone for what truly matters.

I hope this helped you create a plan to incorporate Bible time with your preschooler or toddler. The key is just to start. Sing a song, read a verse and be present with that sweet soul that calls you mama! Leave me a comment below sharing your ideas, input or advice.
